The US military announced Tuesday that it has eliminated a senior ISIS terrorist in Syria.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Tuesday that Khalid 'Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri, a senior terrorist from the Islamic State who was behind terror plots in Europe, was killed in an American airstrike in northwest Syria Monday.

US Central Command forces conducted a unilateral strike in Syria killing Khalid 'Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri, an ISIS senior leader, on April 3rd," CENTCOM said.

"Khalid 'Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri was responsible for planning ISIS attacks into Europe and developed the leadership structure for ISIS."

The US said that no civilians were killed or injured in the strike.

"The death of Khalid 'Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri will temporarily disrupt the organization's ability to plot external attacks," CENTCOM added.

ISIS has suffered heavy losses over the past five years, losing much of the territory it held in 2014. However, the group continues to maintain a significant presence in parts of northern Syria and northern Iraq.

The US maintains a force of roughly 900 soldiers in Syria, as part of the effort to combat ISIS.

CENTCOM Commander General Michael E. Kurilla said that despite ISIS' losses, the group "continues to represent a threat to the region and beyond."

"Though degraded, the group remains able to conduct operations within the region with a desire to strike beyond the Middle East."
