Netflix has opened up about its upcoming Jewish matchmaking show. “Jewish Matchmaking,” which premiers on May 3, stars matchmaker Aleeza Ben Shalom as she assists Jewish singles looking for their “bashert.”

The show promises to feature “singles in the US and Israel as they turn their dating life over to a top Jewish matchmaker.”

"Will using the traditional practice of shidduchim dating help them find their soulmate in today's world?" Netflix asks.

Ben Shalom told ENews that she has a personal matchmaking philosophy.

“In today's world of modern love, we are used to turning to technology to find love," she said. "We download apps and we upload profiles. We swipe left or swipe right. And yet, somehow finding 'the one' has never been harder."

“That's where I come in…but I'm not your granny's matchmaker!" she added.

She explained that she taps into “ancient wisdom” but applies it to the modern world.

Jewish Matchmaking is Netflix’s sequel to their successful "Indian Matchmaking" show, that starred Mumbai matchmaker Sima Taparia in a similar role helping Indian singles.

“Indian Matchmaking” was nominated for an Emmy after premiering in July 2020, but was also criticized by many who said it promoted stereotypes and classism. The show’s production group, Industrial Media’s The Intellectual Property Corporation, will also produce “Jewish Matchmaking.”
