Meretz leaders MKs Yossi Sarid and Mossi Raz visited Hevron today - not to show support for the Jewish residents at the City of Patriarchs, but to film themselves objecting to the Jewish presence there as part of their election campaign efforts. The two MKs, who arranged the visit with local police officials, toured the Hevron Jewish community, stopping at Baruch Marzel's house and Worshipers Way - scene of a PLO ambush where 12 Jews were recently killed - and other sites.
Official spokespersons for the community greeted the Meretz crew with low-key, but pointed, questions regarding policies advocated by the party. Some local residents also called out, "You gave them guns!" and "Oslo criminals!" Sarid spoke to the cameras and the local residents about the costs associated with protecting the Jews in the ancient city. Hevron spokesman Noam Arnon responded by saying that had Meretz and their political allies not given guns to the terrorists, there would be no need for protection. Sarid called another Hevron spokesman, David Wilder, a "parasite." A reporter for Army Radio called the Meretz visit "planned incitement."
