A 21-year-old man from northern Israel was injured in an explosion while driving on Route 65 Monday morning, in an apparent roadside bombing, police said.

The incident occurred on eastbound Route 65 near Megiddo Junction, when a device exploded on the road, damaging a passing car.

MDA emergency first responders were dispatched to the scene, treating the victim before evacuating him to Ha'Emek Medical Center in Afula.

A resident of the Arab town of Salem in the Jezreel Valley, the victim is listed in serious condition and is fully conscious.

According to a preliminary investigation by police, the bomb had been placed behind barrier on the side of the road.

Investigators are probing whether the bombing was an act of terrorism or criminal in nature.

Police have closed Route 65 to traffic in both directions between Megiddo Junction and Ma'ale Iron Junction.
