The British Labour Party may remove the immediate recognition of a Palestinian Arab state from its election platform as it transitions to a “party fit for government, rather than one wishing to remain in opposition,” the UK Jewish News reported.

According to reports, senior Labour officials are looking into releasing a party platform that highlights only core domestic issues that strategists hope will enable Keir Starmer to win the next general election.

In 2014, when the party was led by Ed Miliband, the party added a section to its platform that pledged once in government, it would immediately recognize a Palestinian state. The plank has remained in its policies ever since.

Two sources familiar with the situation within the senior ranks of the party told the Jewish News that there is currently a movement to alter the Labour platform to center around domestic issues such as health, education, transportation and the environment, in an effort to convince voters to propel the party into power.

Police consultations will begin later in January before the platform is finalized in the summer.
