A memorial ceremony was held at Mt. Herzl in Jerusalem today to mark 35 years since the sinking of the Dakar submarine, in which 69 Israel Navy sailors perished. Defense Minister Mofaz, IDF Chief of Staff Yaalon, Israel Navy Commander Yaari, and the victims' families attended the ceremony. The Dakar disappeared in 1968, and despite many years of searches was not found until 1999. It had sunk to a depth of 2900 meters, 500 kilometers from the Israeli coast. A check of the sub found that it had not been attacked, but rather sank because of a technical failure.
