The Knesset plenum passed two laws early Tuesday morning, paving the way for the swearing-in of the new Netanyahu government on Thursday.
The two bills, dubbed the “Deri Law” and the “Smotrich Law, after Shas chief MK Aryeh Deri and Religious Zionist Party chairman MK Bezalel Smotrich respectively, are key to enabling Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu to present his government to the Knesset Thursday.
Both bills passed their second and third third readings in votes conducted early Tuesday morning in the Knesset plenum.
The “Smotrich Law” enables the transfer of authority over civilian affairs in Judea and Samaria from the Defense Minister to the Finance Minister-designate, Bezalel Smotrich; the second is the so-called “Deri Law” which changes the conditions for barring a convict from serving as minister, thus allowing Shas head Aryeh Deri to be appointed as Interior Minister in the new government.
Interim Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin (Likud) resigned his position following the passage of the two bills Tuesday morning, in advance of the swearing-in of the new government, expected to take place this Thursday.
Levin is to be appointed Justice Minister in the new government.
