Sources in Turkey said Wednesday morning that an Israeli-linked spy ring was uncovered within its territory.

Istanbul police and the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) have detained a total of 44 individuals whom local security officials say were linked to the spy ring. Seven of the 44 have been put under arrest.

A search for another 13 individuals is underway.

The alleged spy ring was reportedly monitoring Palestinian Authority ex-patriates in Turkey.

According to Turkish counterintelligence, the individuals were hired by the Mossad to spy on Palestinian Arabs as well as a number of NGOs supportive of their causes.

The operation to bust the ring was launched earlier this week.

Detained suspects include members of a private investigators' association, who have reportedly confirmed the charges against them.

In July, Iranian officials alleged that Mossad operatives were "freely" running operations within Turkey following reports that an Iranian plot to kidnap and kill Israelis had been foiled the previous month.
