Birthright continues. Some 7,000 students from 25 countries are expected to arrive over the next two months for their first-ever visit to Israel. The trips are sponsored by the Birthright Israel project, which, in its five years of existence, has already sponsored trips for over 30,000 young Jews aged 18-26. A plane will land tomorrow carrying 420 Canadian Jews.
Birthright Israel is a partnership of the Israeli government, local Jewish communities (through the United Jewish Communities, Keren Hayesod and the Jewish Agency), and leading Jewish philanthropists. The underlying assumption is that it is every Jewish person's birthright to visit Israel, and the program seeks to enable these trips in order to bridge gaps and strengthen solidarity between Israel and Jewish communities around the world, and to promote Israel's role as a powerful resource in Jewish learning.
