Only today we became a nation?

This week, apparently something very important happens, because Moshe declares to Am Yisrael that "today you have become a nation".

Wouldn't it make more sense to consider the day of receiving the Torah, or the day of leaving Egypt, as the day Am Yisrael became a nation?

What exactly happened today?
What makes it the defining moment that turns us into a nation?
