Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN) died in a car crash in Elkhart County, Indiana, on Wednesday, along with three other people, local media reported.

A car with Walorski and two other passengers was heading southbound on state Route 19 when a car heading northbound veered left and collided with the southbound car, a CBS affiliate in South Bend reported.

All four occupants of both vehicles, one of them apparently the congresswoman's communications director, are dead.

The accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. local time.

The Elkhart County Coroner’s Office and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the investigation.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg wrote on Twitter, "I'm shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and the other victims of this terrible crash. Though we came from very different places politically, she was always prepared to work together where there was common ground, always decent and straightforward, and she cared deeply about her work and her constituents."

Representative Jake Teshka said in a statement, "Jackie was a very good friend. I'm devastated. This is a major loss for our community."
