A driver was arrested and is facing charges after a vehicle drove into the front gates of Canada’s parliament buildings in Ottawa early Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at Parliament Hill, but the vehicle was stopped by security barriers, CBC News reported.

The driver of the car was arrested by Ottawa police and an investigation is taking place.

Police said in a statement that damage to the gates was minor. A police officer was nearby when the car rammed the gates. The officer arrested the suspect who faces pending charges.

The arrested individual has not been identified.

The House of Commons is currently not in session, with MPs on their summer break.
