The Hevron Jewish Community reports that the government has apparently decided to evict the residents of the new Hevron Heroes' neighborhood some time during the course of tonight. The neighborhood - actually several caravans, containers and tents - houses several families at the site of the ambush battle last month in which 12 Israeli civilians, soldiers and officers were killed. It is located along the route known as Worshippers' Path between Kiryat Arba and Hevron, via which hundreds of Jews walk every Sabbath back and forth to the Machpelah Cave and other Hevron sites. Prime Minister Sharon himself said after the attack that Jews must populate the area between the two cities - yet has now apparently given the order to upset the efforts to do just that.
The Joint Kiryat Arba/Hevron committee issued a call today for friends and supporters to "immediately leave for the Kiryat Arba area and join the protest of thousands against the eviction of the residents and destruction of the site."
In a related item, the Supreme Court extended for two more weeks its restraining order against the destruction of 15 mostly-abandoned Arab buildings in Hevron. The army claims that the buildings, situated between the above route and the Machpelah Cave, present a danger to the Jewish worshipers who walk alongside them. The Supreme Court instructed the State to present evidence of such within 14 days.
