US President Biden has tested positive for COVID-19, the White House announced on Thursday.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the president is "experiencing very mild symptoms. He has begun taking Paxlovid."

Biden "will isolate at the White House and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time," Jean-Pierre added. "He has been in contact with members of the White House staff by phone this morning, and will participate in his planned meetings at the White House this morning via phone and Zoom from the residence."

Biden has been fully vaccinated and received two booster shots of the coronavirus vaccine.

Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz responded to the news on Twitter, writing: "Wishing @POTUS Biden, a speedy recovery and good health. Extending my wishes of good health to your loved ones and your team."

President Isaac Herzog replied to the news: "Wishing my friend President Joe Biden a speedy return to full health. The people of Israel, who were delighted to welcome you to Jerusalem last week, are all rooting for your quick recovery!"
