The Amishav organization, which assists “lost Jews” seeking to return to the Jewish people, has just released the first dictionary in Hebrew and Mizo ever published. Mizo is one of the main languages spoken by the Bnei Menashe, a group in northeastern India claiming descent from a lost tribe of Israel. Some 700 Bnei Menashe members have immigrated to Israel in the past few years.
Compiled by Bnei Menashe scholar Allenby Sela, the dictionary took over a year to complete. It contains hundreds of entries, as well as basic information on Hebrew syntax and grammar. “This is the first Hebrew-Mizo dictionary ever to have been published,” said Michael Freund, Director of Amishav and host of Arutz-7’s “Open Mike” radio show, "and we hope it will facilitate the study of Hebrew by the Bnei Menashe and ease their absorption in Israel."
