In 1985, Roger Scruton was expelled from Czechoslovakia for bringing books banned by the Communist regime. The most famous conservative British philosopher was then included in the “list of undesirable people”. In the UK in 2018, Scruton seems to be “undesirable” again, after Prime Minister Theresa May appointed him the czar of the Building Better, Building Beautiful commission.

Since his nomination, the liberal press and Labor MPs of Jeremy Corbyn have been perusing through Scruton's past articles and essays in search of evidence of his supposed “Islamophobia”, “homophobia” and “racism”. They recall a column in the Spectator in which Scruton claimed that the authorities in Europe “hide the sexual crimes of Muslim immigrants”. He is also accused of being a friend of the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Labor MP and shadow minister of the Communities, Andrew Gwynne, has released the astonishing statement that none of Scruton's views has a place in modern democracy. Scruton is accused of defining “Islamophobia” as a word of “propaganda” to create a completely “imaginary enemy”.

In the 1980s, the collaborators and writers of the Salisbury Review, the conservative journal founded by Scruton, were ostracized by the press. At Glasgow Airport, a boycott was held against the presence of Scruton at the university. “While Mugabe was honored.” Scruton recalls in his autobiography, “Gentle Regrets”.

Scruton used to say that it was easier for a non-leftist thinker to give a speech at the University of Lublin, Poland, than in Cambridge, UK. “It became an honor for English-speaking intellectuals to disassociate themselves from me”.

And now it seems to be happening again. From the US, historian Niall Ferguson wrote two days ago that Scruton is the greatest living Englishman and should be prime minister. It remains to be seen whether Theresa May will be able to withstand the shock wave of this demonization campaign.

So Roger Scruton is charged of “Islamophobia”. But the British Labour invite an Islamist like Shakeel Begg to one of their meetings.

If Scruton criticizes Pakistan, they call him “racist”. But they, the masters of double morality, can invite at an anti-racist encounter a man like Begg, who, according to the British judges, incited to violence for the good of Islam.

If Scruton criticizes George Soros, the corbybists call him “anti-Semitic”. If the Labour MPs host Begg, who supports Jihad against Israeli Jews, they call it “tolerance”. Those who justified any kind of crimes committed in the name of Islam, have no shame.
