Moledet, a member party of the National Union list, Yisrael B’Aliyah, and Shinui held their respective primaries yesterday to select candidates for the upcoming Knesset elections. The leaders of the three parties, as expected, remain in the top spots.
Rabbi Benny Elon will remain the party’s number one candidate for Knesset. Former Brigadier-General, Prof. Aryeh Eldad, was elected to the party’s number two slot. Uri Bank was elected to be Moledet’s third Knesset candidate. The three men were elected by a 56 member council. Rabbi Elon will be number two on the joint National Union list, with Eldad number seven, and Bank number ten.
The five hundred member central committee of the Yisrael B’Aliyah party, representing immigrant interests, selected Deputy Prime Minister Natan Sharansky for the top spot on its Knesset list. MK Yuli Edelstein was elected to the second spot and MK Marina Solodkin will be number three on the list. The fourth Knesset candidate is Gennady Riger and the fifth spot will be held by MK Eli Kazhdan, a representative of English-speaking immigrants.
The 165-member council of the Shinui party, dedicated to separating Judaism from the affairs of state, elected current MK Yosef (Tommy) Lapid to the top spot on its Knesset list, with Avraham Poraz, Yehudit Naot and Yossi Paritzky following in descending order. The elections were held over night at a Tel Aviv hotel and concluded with MK Lapid lighting the Chanukah candles.
