Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg (Labor) met with Abu Ala, chairman of the PA's Legislative Council, this morning in a Jerusalem hotel, at Burg's invitation. Following last week's murderous Jerusalem bus attack that killed 11 Israelis, Burg wrote a strong letter to Abu Ala decrying the latter's silence. He said that Abu Ala and other silent PA "moderates" are leaving the field "open to extremists and terrorists who wish to destroy the peace process."

Abu Ala responded that Israel is largely responsible for the situation because of its "racist comments, calls for transfer, and continued settlements." Burg's next move was to invite Abu Ala to today's private meeting, after which the two told reporters that those who seek peace must continue their efforts to renew the dialogue between the sides.
