Former Cabinet Secretary Gideon Saar - who held this position under both Binyamin Netanyahu (briefly) and Ariel Sharon - told Israel Radio this morning that he opposes a Palestinian state. Saar, who recently told Arutz-7 that he would not want to endorse either Sharon or Netanyahu for fear of hurting the other of his two former bosses, is running for a place on the Likud Knesset list. A Palestinian state, which Sharon supports and Netanyahu opposes, is the main issue dividing the two leading candidates for Prime Minister.

Former Prime Minister Yitzchak Shamir also came out against a Palestinian state today, though he did not actually endorse Netanyahu by name - and according to some reports he actually supports Sharon. Shamir spoke out forcefully against Netanyahu when the latter signed the Wye Plantation agreement in late 1998; Netanyahu was accompanied in Wye by his Foreign Minister at the time, Ariel Sharon.

Others who have come out against a Palestinian state of late include Moshe Arens, Ruby Rivlin, Dov Shilansky, Danny Naveh, Likud leader-hopeful Moshe Feiglin, the vast majority of the Likud Central Committee, Professors for a Strong Israel, and many more. The Likud's highest legal body heard a petition today demanding that party chairman Ariel Sharon uphold the party's official position opposing the creation of a Palestinian state.
