When there is a limited budget for all of the world’s refugees should the United Nations continue to keep the people of Gaza on the payroll in perpetuity? Should this aid be realigned for the greater good?
Refugees worldwide are being resettled, encouraged to be self-sufficient as conflict after conflict subsides. However it is formal United Nations policy to do exactly the opposite in Gaza.
Two million Syrian refugees are suffering with no short-term solution to their desperate predicament. Not only can they not return home, but they are missing out on proper services such as education, sufficient food, housing and medical attention.
It is illogical that world aid designed to assist temporary refugee populations has been hijacked to serve the political purposes of the terrorist organisation Hamas whose stated agenda is to annihilate people of the Jewish State of Israel. The United Nations pay for schoolbooks in Gaza adhering to Hamas’s agenda and supports parents who proudly teach their sons to die in the service of jihad – a holy war. One of the highest birth-rates in the world is encouraged with food, clothing and school expenses all provided courtesy of the U.N.
Resettlement in cooperation with the other twenty-odd Arab countries or working towards economic self-sufficiency has never been an option for Gaza as it has been for every single refugee population worldwide: the time has come to revisit this situation. It is a fact that the major industry in Gaza is war-mongering, training terrorists, manufacturing and lobbing rockets into civilian areas of Israel.
The horrors of the Syrian war continue with the resulting millions being displaced while generous donations are going to the wrong cause. That money and those resources being given to Gaza now are required for the Syrian refugees in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, by those still in Syria and for those who will be returning once the conflict ends. The time has come for the U.N. to pull out of Gaza while giving Hamas a clear message that the industry of death is not one which should be supported.
The inhumanity of paying one people to wage war, while not having sufficient resources to assist another people where basic help is needed says a lot about the United Nations.
The League of Nations was replaced by the United Nations after World War Two. Maybe it is time for another organisation with true moral values to take the U.N.’s place.
