MK Michael Kleiner (Herut) plans to call upon all the political parties to reserve a spot for Jonathan Pollard on their list of Knesset candidates in the upcoming elections. Speaking at a special event last night marking the beginning of Pollard's 18th year in U.S. prison, Kleiner said that he has already offered Pollard the #1 spot on his own list.
Visiting Arutz-7 studios today, Kleiner said that the idea came to him when he remembered that Ze'ev Jabotinsky, who was imprisoned by the British in 1920, was placed on all the Zionist parties' lists during the elections at the time - and thus got caused the British to release him from prison. "Even the parties that objected to his opinions showed a spirit of unity and love by reserving a spot for him on their list," Kleiner said. "It's time that the political establishment and the Israeli public stand behind Pollard and give him genuine public backing."
MK Kleiner also said that he is trying to have the Arab Balad party of Azmi Bishara disqualified from running in the coming elections because of its anti-Israel platform. He said that he is aware that if he is successful, the Arabs have threatened to boycott the election altogether. Regarding his go-it-alone campaign, he told Arutz-7's Haggai Seri that he would be willing to discuss a merger with the National Union - with which he ran together in the last election - if such a proposal were to be offered, but that none has yet come. Kleiner revealed that his polls show support for his campaign hovering around the minimum cut-off level of 1.5% of the number of valid votes.
