In this portion, we see the intrepid Pinchas, acting unconventionally and spontaneously to stop a terrible moral transgression on the part of the Israelites.
Pinchas was able to recognize and diffuse the evil plans of Balak by his immediate response.
As a result G-d promised him and his offspring "a covenant of peace."
As we come to the end of the book of Numbers (Bamidbar), we are really closing the narrative of the Torah, as the Fifth Book of Moses is the narrative of Moses himself. In this parsha, he asks G-d to appoint a successor.
The daily sacrifice in this parsha is a symbol of continuity.
