At close to forty university campuses this first week of March there will be an outpouring of vitriol and hate against Israel. The so- called ‘Israel Apartheid Week’ will be under way supported by a scattering of anti- Israel Israeli academics like like Adi Ophir of Tel Aviv University, and Neve Gordon of Ben- Gurion University. The ostensible goal of the week is to convince the various student- communities that Israel is another South Africa, and that the Palestinians living in Israel suffer from the same kind of discrimination that the blacks and coloreds did in South Africa. The platform of the promoters of the week does not openly call for Israel’s destruction though it does call for

something equivalent to it. i.e. the return to Israel of all 1948 Palestinian Arab refugees and their descendants. It also calls for an end to the construction of the seperation wall between Israel and the Palestinian territories, and for equality between Israeli Jewish and Israeli Arab Palestinian citizens.
Pro- Israel groups are organizing at a number of the campuses. And they will attempt to confront fiction with fact, to point out that Israel’s Arab citizens have identical tic voting rights and legal protections as Jews. They will point out that Israel has enabled its Arab community to develop in educational and health terms in a far more advanced way than have the Arab countries themselves for their own populations. They too will point out the absolute absurdity and upside- downness of these charges against Israel.
For when it comes to totalitarian terrorism, silencing of any opposition violently, it is the Palestinians whether the more extreme Hamas or the more corrupt Fatah who deserve censure. These two Palestinian groups refuse to recognize any Jewish history in the land of Israel before that is 1947. They deny that there ever was a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. They in their daily rantings post vicious anti- Semitic propaganda, directed not only at Israelis but all Jews. goal of the week is to convince the various student- communities that Israel is another South Africa. The Palestinian Arabs in their attitude toward Jews have been at least in their media, racist and mendacious.
Thus if there is any kind of Apartheid Week it should be one which condemns the Palestinian Arabs and their supporters. Here it is notable that their most vocal supporter at the moment is the regime of the Mullahs in Iran. This is a totalitarian regime which aims to totally suppress all opposition. It is one based on a fundamental Muslim ideology. And it openly proclaims its intention to destroy the state of Israel.
It is doubtful to my mind that serious university students, those who care for the values of freedom of inquiry, of dialogue and respectful attention to views of others, of impartial truth- will be much influenced by the Apartheid Week totalitarians. Rather it is to be hoped that such attacks on Israel and Jews will bring more Jewish students to defense not only of Israel but of their own values and identity.
It is very likely then that the Upside- down- values the ‘Apartheid Israel’ people will bring exactly the opposite result of the one that they hoped for i.e. There will be increased support for Israel by those who are open and able to investigate and know the truth that is the only truly democratic society in the Middle East.
