Sometimes even the State of Israel is blessed with a one-time opportunity to improve its status. This opportunity is now knocking at Israel's door.
The USA is in the midst of a serious financial crisis, which is driving the US economy down and hundreds of

thousands, possibly millions, into bankruptcy and redundancy. The US Treasury, itself in deep debt, has taken unprecedented steps to protect the consumer, inclusive of nationalization of the major equity lenders and the largest insurance company. All this places the administration, present and future, in distress, and focuses attention on the real American problem - the economy.
From time immemorial the Israeli public has been almost bludgeoned to believe the State of Israel is utterly dependent on the US administration for economic survival, specifically the annual aid package, without which the Israeli economy might tail-spin and crash.
Lo and behold, some months ago, when the exchange rate of the US dollar took a nosedive against the shekel, the Bank of Israel began buying dollars at a rate of one hundred million a day, to prop up the American currency with the power of the shekel. Within three weeks, the Bank bought two-years-worth of American aid. No one minded, no one peeped, no one took an exception to the absurdity that Israel depends on American governmental handouts. Nor did the outflow of three billion US dollars dent the economy in any discernible way. Thus, it has been conclusively proven that Israel is not dependent on the US civilian aid.
No doubt world economies are interdependent, and when the US contracts a cold, the whole world is sick, but Israel no more than any other economy, possibly less so. This is the opportunity to jettison this monkey perching on the shoulder; i.e., the fraudulent notion of economic dependence on US handouts.
I hereby propose that Israel's government and treasury announce that henceforth Israel will not seek any more US aid, if only to alleviate the burden born by the American taxpayer.
What is to be gained by this move? First, a huge gain in Israel's standing in US public opinion, which generally detests nations demanding handouts. Second, greater political degrees of freedom vis-a-vis an administration unable to wield the economic baton. Third, creation of momentum in the American public to drop all handouts to UNWRA, the UN agency created to perpetuate the Arab refugee hoax. Fourth, similar public abhorrence toward the bottomless pit of handouts keeping the Arabs on Jewish soil, preventing their emigration to the oil-rich Arab countries. Fifth, similar abrogation of the funding for the Palestinian Authority terror and murder administration. Sixth, creation of momentum to stop funding the NGOs currently serving the purposes of the PA to dispossess and kill the Jews residing in their ancestral homeland.
What about the military aid? Here the picture is marginally different, since most of the aid is actually a subsidy paid to the US industry in the guise of foreign aid. Very limited amounts of dollars are convertible to locally usable shekel currency. Moreover, some of the aid is inherently ridiculous. We have all seen the US school buses disguised as military transports with IDF license plates. The US military aid can be replaced by parity, US funds being used for mutually useful projects; Israel will survive sans disguised school buses.
What will Israel do about the sudden drop of three billion dollars in the annual budget? Let us look into the populist legislation passed by the lawmakers in the waning days of the Knesset. Let the State pass the annual universal tax return, thereby increasing the taxpayer pie and clamping down on tax evasions. Let the State put an income

test to every pensioner, so that only the needy actually draw out of social security funds; it is inconceivable that a pensioner who is also a member of Knesset will draw as much social security as the poorest of the pension-less elderly. Let the state extend the service of security establishment personnel to that of other public servants, saving twenty years of full pay for no work. Let the tax on excessive gains of executives be more realistic. Let the income of senior public sector employees not exceed that of the Prime Minister. Potential sources to replace the US handout are there by the dozens. Three billion shekels are but one percent of the budget and a much smaller fraction of the gross national product.
What chance is there that Israel will heed my call? Practically zero. Because the perceived economic dependence on the American government handout is the scarecrow Israelis are exposed to when Jewish interests are at stake, such as the unification of the country under Jewish sovereignty and promoting the unfettered Jewish right of return to their ancestral homeland. The Israeli leadership actually loves the status of the vassal subservient to the Big Duke; it absolves them of all faults and defeats.
The Hatikva movement says that the scarecrow must be dismantled, the vassal status repudiated. National sovereignty must be manifest in political-economic independence. The Jewish leadership that can make such changes can only come about in a political environment that places the interests of the Land of Israel and the People of Israel first and foremost. Now that will be a radical innovation.
