Only a few hours before last night's murderous spree, Border Guard policemen stopped a suspicious vehicle somewhat north of Metzer - thus thwarting a double attack in Israel. The guards were manning a checkpoint in Nachal I'ron (Wadi Ara) when their suspicions were aroused - and were confirmed when the car blew up seconds after being ordered to halt. One of the passengers was wearing an explosive belt, while the second man was holding an explosives charge in a bag. Both terrorists were killed in the blast. The IDF reports that the two were intending to infiltrate pre-1967 Israel to carry out a suicide bombing. No Israeli casualties were reported.

In yet another terrorist attack, a Kiryat Arba resident was lightly wounded this morning as he was driving along the Jerusalem-Hevron highway near Halhoul. Terrorists waiting in ambush opened fire on him, and he was treated in the Kiryat Arba clinic. Yesterday, a 15-year-old youth from Shechem was arrested on his way to carry out a suicide attack... A senior Hamas member from Hevron was also taken into custody... Border Guard police sappers defused two powerful explosive devices, weighing a total of 160 kilograms, found in hothouses in the Gaza Strip community of Morag.

In response to the recent surge in mortar attacks on Gush Katif, an IDF helicopter attacked a mortar shell manufacturing plant in Gaza last night. Three Arabs were lightly wounded.
