Only a few hours before last night's murderous spree, Border Guard policemen stopped a suspicious vehicle somewhat north of Metzer and thus thwarted a double attack in Israel. The guards were manning a checkpoint in Nachal I'ron (Wadi Ara) when the car arrived. One of the passengers carried on his body an explosive belt, and the second passenger held a bag containing an explosive charge. Both of these exploded seconds after the car was ordered to stop, and both terrorists were killed. The IDF reports that the two terrorists were intending to infiltrate pre-1967 Israel in order to carry out a suicide bombing. No Israeli casualties were reported.
Also yesterday, a 15-year-old youth from Shechem was arrested on his way to carry out a suicide attack. A senior Hamas member from Hevron was also taken into cusody. In addition, Border Guard police sappers defused two powerful explosive devices, weighing a total of 160 kilograms, found in hothouses in the Gaza Strip community of Morag.
