Question of the Week:

Dear Rabbi Moss.

I have a question. I have learned that everything that we have in this world comes from G-d. So does G-d have a sense of humor?

Thank you very much.

From Jacob (age 10)

Answer:

Dear Jacob,

G-d most definitely has a sense of humor. Sometimes we don't get his jokes, often they go right over our head. But we have all experienced G-d's sense of humor.

Have you ever noticed how at school, when you have to do a project in pairs, you often end up being paired with the kid that you really don't like? Or how the one day you didn't do your homework, the teacher calls upon you to read out your answers to the homework questions? Or how the time you pretend you're too sick to go to school and instead go skateboarding, you bump into the whole class out on a trip?

Some people call this Murphy's Law - that whatever can go wrong, will go wrong - but I think it's G-d's sense of humor. He puts us in funny situations (or at least He finds them funny), and challenges us to react to them in the right way. Will you lie and read your friend's homework answers, or be honest and say you didn't do it? Will you try to get out of working with someone you don't like, or will you push yourself to get on with him and maybe make a new friend?

G-d is not trying to be mean, He just wants us to become the best people we can be, so He tests us. He wants to laugh with us, not at us. If you realize that He is the one behind those funny twists that life takes, you can laugh along with Him.

Then, when you stand up to the challenge, and do the right thing, G-d gets a real kick out of it. He laughs with pride and joy, saying, "Look at My little Jacob! I put him in a sticky situation and he passed the test!"

G-d sets up the joke, but only you can deliver the punch line.
