It is painful to write these words; more painful to know that they are true. These limitations have sustained the greatness of the American character, and the generosity, prosperity and the good nature of American society. Without American promises to "monitor", "manage", "guarantee" and "insure" the process, the Emperor's nakedness would appear almost as shameless as it really is. Lawrence, to sever all lands east of the Jordan River from the Jewish national home and to ban Jewish settlement there. Churchill crowned these betrayals with the most murderous one of all. When he became prime minister in 1940 and began making all those memorable speeches about England's indomitable spirit (now destroyed by its own welfare state), he enforced with full vigor the "White Paper" of 1939 keeping the Jews out of Palestine.
