Garbage has started piling up once again throughout the country as 100,000 municipal council workers have called their second strike in less than a month. Talks this morning between Finance Minister Silvan Shalom, Local Authorities Union Chairman Adi Eldar and Histadrut Chairman Amir Pertez to try and bring the strike to a quick end floundered.

The strikers are demanding among other things a NIS 700 wage increase for several thousands of workers earning the minimum wage. As a result of the strike, all municipal offices are closed, mail service is suspended, and nursery school assistants are staying home. In addition, tickets for parking violations will not be issued, and emergency services will operate on a holiday schedule. At the same time about 40,000 civil service workers who have been striking for the past month remain off the job.
