An agreement was reached last night between aides representing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to hold elections for the Likud party chairmanship on November 28. The man who comes out on top will then serve as the party's candidate for Prime Minister in national elections at the end of January. Also last night, the two sides agreed on December 8, as the date for Likud members to vote for the party's list to the 16th Knesset.
In other elections news, the Head of the Knesset Constitutional Law Committee, Michael Eitan (Likud), has called for disqualifying Knesset member Ahmed Tibi’s Arab party from running candidates in the upcoming Knesset elections. Tibi has been repeatedly accused of supporting terrorist attacks against Israel. Eitan's protest is based on a new law that precludes persons or parties that support terrorism against Israel from running in the elections.
Also, following this morning's weekly Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Sharon adamantly denied rumors that he has offered Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert the position of Foreign Minister in place of Binyamin Netanyahu if Sharon wins in the upcoming elections. Sharon told reporters that such rumors were baseless and divisive.
