An unsigned ad in Ha'aretz this week so incensed MK Zevulun Orlev of the National Religious Party that he asked Attorney-General Elyakim Rubenstein to order a criminal investigation into those who publicized it. The large ad, which appeared on Sunday, said only, "Yitzchak [Rabin] is not with us, and Effie is with them;" the last three words are a play-on-words with the word "Eitam."
Orlev feels that the ad can be interpreted as meaning that Rabin, who was assassinated seven years ago, is not with us because Infrastructures Minister Effie Eitam - whose hawkish views irk certain left-wing elements - is with "them," as if to say that "Eitam is among Rabin's murderers." Alternatively, Orlev notes, the ad might mean that just as Rabin is no longer with us, the same should be with Eitam. "These words are grave and totally unfounded incitement," Orlev wrote to Rubenstein, "against Minister Eitam. As you know, Eitam was a senior officer in the army until a year and a half ago." Orlev asked that the matter be investigated "in order to give teeth to the new law forbidding incitement and racism."
