The current war on Iraq will soon be over and long forgotten. Much like with Afghanistan, for a while the world will care and send money and food in the hope that democracy will flourish, and somewhere down the road the Iraq project will be all but abandoned. There will however be one thing of importance that will come out of this war - America did the impossible, and defied the world. They indirectly told the United Nations that they are unimportant, and showed the world just how useless the U.N. is to the stability and peace of the world.
At the end of World War II, the United Nations was established to ensure that the carnage and pointless murder seen just a few years before would never occur again. They established offices world wide, sent troops to keep the peace in battle zones, and constantly pointed out where the world was going wrong and what was needed to solve these problems. For a while, it actually seemed like the United Nations was accomplishing its mission. The world was experiencing a cold war with no weapons ever actually being fired, and some minor regional conflicts, but for the most part nations remained calm with the help of the UN.
Then something went terribly wrong. The United Nations stopped trying to protect and prevent, and began trying to create and conquer. Resolution after resolution was passed to ensure that the goals of the few were imposed on the many. Countries run by murderers and tyrants like Syria and Libya were allowed a say on issues of peace. Israel, a nation that never once was the aggressor in any war, was condemned some three hundred times, while the Palestinians, who constantly murdered and bombed innocent civilians, were never once censured.
Then came Operation Iraqi Freedom. For months, America made a conscious effort to involve the United Nations in its decision to rid Iraq once and for all of Saddam Hussein, a tyrant who murdered political opponents, desecrated hundreds of mosques by proclaiming himself a prophet of G-d, and created and purchased weapons capable of murdering hundreds of thousands of people.
America's pleas however, fell on the deaf ears of the United Nations. Its members cared more about the monetary costs involved and profits that would be lost, then the potential loss of human life and destruction. In back rooms and distant conferences, America and its allies pleaded with U.N. members, like France and Russia, to think of the consequences if they did not act. They went to their Canadian neighbours for support, but got a cold shoulder. They even went to China, a nation that knows all too well the cost of inaction, but unfortunately greed, fostered by the U.N., encouraged these nations in saying ?no? to war.
With little other choice, the United Sates and whoever else was willing to fight for freedom and not for funding, attacked Iraq. Even as this was being written, American and British troops were involved in heated battles or launching missiles aimed at the destruction of the Iraqi regime. America and its allies went ahead without the United Nations, without world support, and did the right thing.
So what now for the U.N.? So far, they have not passed a resolution condemning America for defying the U.N. They have not passed a resolution condemning America for its "excessive use of force" in blowing up buildings like Israel does and for which it is almost always condemned. The U.N. has not even spoken about sending its troops to help keep the peace or to distribute aid to the innocent Iraqi civilians. All they have said is that the war will lead to catastrophic consequences for the Iraqi people, with a refugee crisis that the world has not seen since the end of WWII.
Yet, the U.N. remains motionless. Its members sit quietly and wait for America and Britain to do the work they should have been doing. They sit there in their offices and councils speaking about when and if to get involved, or the legality of this war, but nothing more. They sit, they talk, they lie, and they get nothing done, while people are dying. They have failed.
The United Nations is no longer united, nor is it made up of nations. Rather, it is divided and run by a few power-hungry individuals who don't care about peace and security, but care only about money and more money. It is time for this organization of dressed up criminals to be disbanded, their offices sold, their armies broken up, their representatives sent home. They have failed themselves, they have failed their countries, and they have failed the world.
G-d should truly bless America, and its allies, for remembering a time when life was about living, and not about making a profit, about happiness, and not about greed.
