Israel is periodically plagued by nationwide and sector Histadrut union strikes that paralyze the country or, at least, major parts of the economy. As it turns out, Israel is not alone in the Middle East when it comes to such power plays. The following should sound familiar to every Israeli citizen.



This past week saw a general strike in Algeria that virtually shut down all sectors of the economy, including financial and educational establishments, along with almost the entire public sector. According to the national secretary for foreign relations of the General Federation of Algerian workers, as quoted in the Arab press, ?the response rate for the strike is 86%. All sectors are frozen....? The strike was called to protest what the union calls the deteriorating social conditions among workers, as well as the Algerian government's economic reform plans, which include privatization of many state-owned enterprises.



In response, the official spokeswoman for the Algerian government, Khaleida Toumi, said in a press statement that ?the government honors all forms of expressions including strike. Doors of dialogue are always open to find solutions....?
