Israel, one of the smallest democracies, and India, one of the largest, have been developing ties of all kinds for some time now. Two recent items that appeared in the press exemplify the wide-ranging nature of these ties and the potential for deepening cooperation between the two states in a variety of fields.

A cutting-edge helicopter jointly designed and developed by Israel Aircraft Industries(IAI), and Hindustan Aeronautics has recently entered the international aviation marketplace. The multi-purpose helicopter is being marketed for military, police and civilian use. According to press reports, the development of the aircraft began in India and IAI provided and installed some of its most advanced equipment and technologies. At the 2003 Aero-India Exhibition in Bangalore, the joint Indian-Israeli project was well-received, with several countries expressing interest in the helicopter.

The other item that exemplifies the links between India and Israel comes from the area of agriculture. According to a news story appearing on ExpressIndia.com, ?Farming technology from Israel is beginning to lure progressive farmers in the capital?s agricultural tracts. And Delhi government wants to push this trend further with a new policy that will be announced soon.? The Indian explains the trend: ?Israeli net and plastic houses are being spotted on the border ? some farmers are doing away with mud for germinating their seeds (an Israeli technique to keep out mud-borne diseases). Others, seeing profit, are growing off-season vegetables, again by Israeli technique, in low cost plastic green houses.?

The Indian Agricultural Research Institute is training Indian agriculturalists and farmers in the Israeli techniques of safe, insecticide-free, exotic and off-season plant cultivation. And, according to the report, ?Delhi Development Minister Haroon Yusuf also has plans to promote this [technique]: ?We want farmers to raise low-volume high-yield crops. Vegetables, flowers and off-season cultivation would help in this. We will soon release our plan and follow it up with field training.?
