Israeli artists are garnering more international recognition this year. Since the start of 2003, two Israeli films have received awards at a French Film and Television festival, six Israeli films were chosen to take part in the 53rd Berlinale film festival, and eight Israeli artists will present at the Venice Biennale.

1. The film Purity by Anat Zuria, about Haredi women was awarded the first prize (the Golden FIPA Award) in the creative documentary category at FIPA - Festival International de Programmes Audiovisuels, in Biarritz, France. The televised drama, ?Kol Ma Sheyesh Li? (?Whatever I Own?) was awarded the Golden FIPA Award for Best Screenplay. FIPA is an international festival for televised programs held in France.

2. Six Israeli films were chosen to take part in the 53rd Berlin International Film Festival, the Berlinale, scheduled to open next week in Berlin, Germany. The Israeli films selected - A City With No Pity, Galoot (Exile), Broken Wings, Yossi and Jagger, Black and White Father and Miss Entebbe - will join some 250 other films to be screened in fifteen different theaters in the German city.

The Berlinale, founded in 1951, is generally ranked as the second most important film festival after the well-known Cannes Film Festival.

3. Eight Israeli artists - Nahum Tevet, Etti Abargel, Carmit Gil, Avner Ben-Gal, Michael Helfman, Efrat Shvilli, Doron Solomons, and Amit Gore - were invited to make presentations at the Venice Biennale of Art. The Venice Biennale of Art is the oldest established festival of its kind in Italy, established at the end of the 19th Century. The Biennale ?is widely considered to be the most important and prestigious event on the international contemporary visual arts calendar. Thousands of the world's most influential artists, curators, critics and collectors visit the Biennale,? according to the festival?s prospectus. As for Israeli participation, the Jewish Agency?s Global Jewish Agenda reports that ?[t]he invitation of so many Israelis is unprecedented; last year, for instance, only one Israeli participated in the festival.?
