What are the disadvantages of a coup d'etat? Arbitrary lawlessness and chaos; the impulse of the empowered superceding the rule of law; in a democracy, the will of the people overruled; a lack of legitimacy in the eyes of the world.
Take a careful look at what is going on in our Holy Land today, and you will find these things going on anyway -
The world already denies our claim to our Land, and our Temple, even as the Hand of G-d plucks a stone from across 2,800 years, which the moslem builders discarded, to remind us of our Temple, the cornerstone of our faith (Psalms 118:22-25 - ?The stone which the builders rejected is become the chief corner-stone. This is HaShem's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which HaShem hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. We beseech Thee, O HaShem, save now!?)
A brief summary of some of the other more obvious and recent perfidies -
Israeli heroes Shaul Mofaz and Moshe Feiglin are disqualified, but arab terrorists are permitted to run for the Knesset, a supreme court that undermines Jewish traditions and the will of the People of Israel, with unmitigated fervor and is answerable to no one in its rush to violate all things Jewish ("we can't allow left-wing soldiers to disobey orders for reasons of conscience - what would happen when we order moral Israeli soldiers to be good kapos and keep the settlers in their ghettoes and round them up when the time comes to make more of Eretz Yisrael Judenrein?"), election court judgments unimaginably and transparently biased (Sharon's tv speech pulled, Herut's ad denied, incitement against Israeli settlers okayed, then self-consciously reversed), a representative of the Tel Aviv District Prosecution office self-righteously raising herself above the law to illegally sabotage Sharon's election campaign, an almost universal de facto suspension of the democratic process (Sharon overriding his party ideology, the majority Likud's party members, and the will of the People of Israel, a labor party deeply divided and unable to decide who should be doing the surrendering on their behalf, or in what order our enemies should be surrendered to, plus mitzna's miscellaneous dirty deeds).
In a country surrounded by canada, Cuba, and Mexico, this could spell doom. We are surrounded by countless millions of enemies, who live only to complete the nazi Holocaust - and are equipped and eager to do so at a moment?s notice. The house is falling down around us, and it will take a heroic effort to come out of this okay.
I would suggest that Israel is now suffering from all of the disadvantages that would accompany a coup d'etat, without benefitting from any of the advantages it would entail - a coherent policy, implemented forcefully, and without interference.
So what about a good old fashioned coup d'etat? What could it hurt?
Polls show that the People of Israel know that mitzna is the Dr. Kevorkian of Israeli politics and that Sharon as prime minister again will not make things any better - again. The electorate's confidence in the integrity of Israel's political processes has never been lower. People feel as if they can vote for the corrupt that will make things worse or the corrupt that will keep things just as terrible as they are now. Why not try something different? Something that might make things better in the foreseeable future.
After the coup, Sharon would have a free hand militarily to once again achieve the crushing victories he is known for, and the country wouldn't be held accountable for his actions. After all, he would then be considered a terrible dictator who ran amuck over Israel's 'democracy'. Who could blame us? We would keep shimon peres handy to denounce every breath Sharon took as being utterly against the will of the Nation and People of Israel. Sharon could destroy our enemies, disband the corrupt supreme court, dismiss our contentious and damaging parliament of whores, and prepare a clean slate for
a healthy Jewish State.
Who in Israel doesn't want Sharon to end the arabs' reign of terror? Who would stand in Sharon's way once he gained momentum? Give the Jewish-by-birth seditious fifth-column reason to fear an unfettered Sharon more than they fear the arabs, and we will see very clearly how little their vaunted social-consciousness affects their decision making, as they line up to cheer Sharon on to victory.
Wouldn't the military support him if he went to them and said "I will make it better, if you support me"? Wouldn't the people of Israel chant his name in the streets if they thought he was going to do just that?
If Sharon pulled this off, and crushed the enemies of Israel with unfettered might, we would certainly have to add another holiday to our calendar. We wouldn't light candles like we do on Chanukah, we would all go out at night and dig a bunch of little holes in the ground, and paint them with glow-in-the-dark paint. Then we would teach our children of the miracle of how the oil burned for 7 years...
After the victory, the Sharon junta would convene a constitutional convention, assemble the Great Scholars of Zion, and they would construct and offer a sensible, Torah-compliant, constitutionally based, genuine democracy to the Jewish People. When the People of Israel accepted and implemented it, he would hand over power to the new government and retire with the stature of a David, or a Solomon.
To placate those who cast their eyes towards the nations for salvation, the new government's first order of business would be, of course, to try Sharon for war crimes. With a wink towards the memory of arafat, the court would decry Sharon's means, but embrace the end achieved. A stern sentence would be handed down, exiling Sharon to his farm for the rest of his days.
...or we could just do more of what we've been doing, get more of what we've got, and let the final crisis be of our enemies' making instead of ours, and allow them to write the history afterwards.
Happy (and corrupt) election, Israel!
