The Syrian media, all strictly controlled, commented this past week on both Israel and the United States, noting that the two states complement one another in their ?aggression?, thanks to ?Zionist intrigues?. The Syrian press called for Arab ?joint defense? and ?solidarity? to confront both the US and Israel.
On Israel and Zionist Intrigues
The Syrian daily a-Thawra recommended ?the activation of the Joint Defence Agreement and the crystallization of a real Arab solidarity? in order to confront ?the US-backed Israeli attempts to consolidate its occupation of the Arab territories and to crush the Palestinians.?
It is only because it has fallen into the clutches of ?Zionist intrigues,? the Syrian daily writes, that the American administration shows ?hatred and enmity... toward the Arabs,? and sends arms to the region in a ?hectic and frenzied rush....? A-Thawra editorialized that the US administration, run by defense hawks, has a short-sighted vision that only ?serves Israel and its biblical project.? In the Arab world, the newspaper continued, ?the Arab nation blames the United States for... blind bias to Israel... and for the immoral coverup of the Zionist practices....?
Commenting on the forthcoming Israeli elections, the Tishreen daily noted that ?in spite of corruption and bribery scandals involving Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon... the opinion polls show that it is certain he will be the forthcoming prime minister....? The reason Israeli public opinion backs Sharon, the daily says, is ?because of [his] extremism and terrorism and skills in shedding Arab blood? and because he ?has no peace program.?
On Iraq and Preventing Aggression
On the war brewing against Iraq and other US actions in the Middle East, the A-Thawra daily commented simply that ?it is impossible for the world to remain at the mercy of a unipolar policies and the blind investment in force.?
Another Syrian daily, Tishreen, commented that ?the United States is not concerned whether Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction or not. Rather, Washington has already planned for the occupation of Iraq and for seizing its oil resources.? Therefore, the newspaper says, ?only Arab solidarity can prevent aggression on Iraq.?
The al-Baath daily noted that this is a ?critical period in the history of the region....? According to the Syrian newspaper there is ?necessity to intensify the regional movement? on the Iraq issue before ?the approaching deadline specified by UN Resolution 1441... amidst the US. military build up in the region.? To that end, the Syrian leadership is making ?common efforts? with Turkey to ?save the region from the catastrophic consequences of ... war.? The upcoming trip of Syrian foreign minister Farouq a-Shar?a to Turkey falls in the framework of such efforts, al-Baath reported.
