The Jewish Agency?s Global Jewish Agenda news bulletin reported recently about the existence of a unique project designed to help immigrant youth who have found themselves homeless. Called ?Someone to Run With?, the project includes the operation of a drop-in outreach center southern Tel Aviv. The center was opened by the Jewish Agency in cooperation with Elem, the Association for Youth in Distress in Israel. ?Someone? is supported by the UJA-Federation of New York.
The Tel Aviv center provides the immigrant youth with food, clothing, showers and laundry service, while arranging for housing in a hostel or rental apartment. According to the Jewish Agency, ?A case manager evaluates each youngster?s needs, builds an individualized rehabilitation program, and serves as liaison between him or her and social services.? The bulletin reports, ?Elem has identified some 50 youngsters between the ages of 17 and 24 whose only home is the streets of Tel Aviv -- although it is estimated that the actual number is significantly greater. The youngsters face a wide range of problems including economic distress, hunger, disease, and loneliness. Many have resorted to prostitution, delinquency, and/or alcohol and drug abuse.? It is these young people that ?Someone to Run With? aims to help in exiting the destructive cycle they have started.
