As first reported last week, Israeli windsurfer Gal Friedman has maintained his first-place spot in the week-long world championship windsurfing competition, in Thailand. On Sunday, Gal (whose name means ?wave? in Hebrew) became the official first place winner in the international mistral competition and the first Israeli to have done so. He maintained a nine-point lead over the second-place windsurfer from Greece.

In 1996, Gal became Israel?s third Olympic medal winner, when he took the bronze medal in the mistral windsurfing competition at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
