On December 7, the Shalva Center for physically and mentally challenged children celebrated its 13th anniversary with a festive evening at the Henry Crown Theatre in Jerusalem. Ehud Manor emceed and entertainment featured Chanan Yovel and an Irish band.

The Shalva Center, located in Jerusalem?s Har Nof neighborhood, was established in 1990 by Kalman and Malky Samuels, as a result of the difficulties they experienced with their blind, deaf and hyperactive son, Yossi. The debilitating experience of caring for a child with limitations at home made them aware of the desperate need for a supportive framework for families in this situation; they established Shalva to provide such families with the services that they themselves so desperately needed. The center operates round the clock, seven days a week. Shalva is staffed by expert professionals and volunteers, members of youth movements, and girls doing their national service. Every night, several children sleep over at the center, so that they can develop personal independence and give their parents a 36-hour break.

The center was renamed Beit Nachshon after Nachshon Wachsman, a solider who was abducted and murdered by Hamas terrorists in October 1994. His brother, Raphael, who suffers from Down Syndrome has been at Shalva since it was established.
