The Palestine Media Center (PMC) noted that there sits a miniature mock-up of an American icon, the Statue of Liberty, just outside PLO leader Yasser Arafat?s Ramallah compound. The Palestinian Authority?s Lady Liberty, however, has her torch upside down. The statue, standing three meters in height, was created by artist Nabil Anani, reported the PMC, not in admiration, but in disdain for the United States.
Anani is reported as having told Agence France Presse, ?We made this statue with the torch upside down to say that the United States is not genuine, as long as it backs the crimes committed by Israel... to tell the Israelis and Americans that freedom and democracy which rests on the suffering of others is false?
The PMC reported that Anani is using the American symbol of freedom as a way to express his ?anger over Washington?s support of the warmonger and security-obsessed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, and calling him a ?man of peace.?? The decision to create and place the statue near the PLO leader?s headquarters came as Anani ?watched Israel?s multiple assaults on Arafat?s Ramallah compound since last December....? the Media Center related.
