The Jordan Times recently reported on a Jordanian man who murdered his unmarried sister in cold blood because she was openly talking to a stranger at a wedding party.

"Mohammad Rashid, 23, had...been sentenced to 15 years in April 2002 for hitting and killing his sister, Marasem, 19, with a water hose in their Tabarbour home in November 2000 for what he claimed were reasons of family honour. Court documents indicated Rashid attacked his sibling with [the blunt metal nozzle of] a water hose because he saw her talking to a strange man during a wedding party.

"Instead of alerting police to his act, Rashid placed his sister's body in a truck and buried her illegally in a cemetery, the documents read.

"The victim's 47-year-old sister, who witnessed the incident, did not alert the authorities after witnessing the incident, fearing for her life, but came forward later after a fight with her brother over the events, explained the court documents.

A postmortem indicated the victim had not engaged in any sexual activities, and that she had died of trauma and a brain hemorrhage caused by a severe blow to the head.

Rashid received a 30 month jail sentence for his offense.
