A new soft drink, named after a holy spring in Mecca, is hitting the Saudi market this month, reports a-Sharq al-Awsat. The drink, produced in the Islamic Republic of Iran, is cashing in on what the Saudi newspaper calls a ?boycott campaign launched in Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Arab world against US support of Israel.? According to the newspaper, ?sale of US products, especially soft drinks and fast food chains, was adversely affected due to?? the boycott.
Zamzam Cola, distributed in Saudi Arabia by al-Majarah Soft Drinks Co., has just started selling in the desert kingdom, reports a-Sharq al-Awsat. The importer reported ?highly encouraging sales,? according to the Saudi paper, saying that ?[i]n the first week, the company distributed about four million one-liter bottles, but high demand has forced them to place import orders for several million more bottles?? To help handle the demand, a-Sharq reports, ?Preparations are under way to establish a bottling factory in Bahrain, and Al-Majarah has already requested the Iranian parent company for a license to set up a similar factory in Saudi Arabia?.?
