The Jewish Agency reported last week that the largest number of olim to arrive in a single day since the beginning of the year touched down on the land of Israel on August 5th. The 515 immigrants came by boat and airplane from Moldova, the Ukraine, the southern Caucasus, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, South Africa, India and Iran. That day?s total was almost met the next day, when another 500 immigrants arrived. The week?s total of olim was 1,050 ? a record week since the beginning of the year. This year has also included a record-breaking flight of more than 400 new immigrants from the United States and Canada two months ago. All told, the Jewish Agency reports, from January 1st through July 31st, 2002, about 18,000 olim came to Israel.
