The Department of Tourism Reported an 11% increase for May 2002 for Israelis accommodated in hotels, when compared to May the previous year. The number reached approximately 1 million accommodated for the month in various hotels in Israel. In May 2002, the numbers of Israelis accommodated in local hotels represented 85% of all those accommodated in local hotels, i.e., including foreign tourists, and thus helped to offset the downturn (-55%) in foreign tourism.



Various cities saw different results. Tel Aviv and Yafo, registered a 37% increase in Israeli tourists accommodated. Eilat saw a 19% increase, and the Dead Sea a 13% increase. Jerusalem registered a small 1% increase, while Tiberias and Netanya registered a decrease in the number of Israeli tourists accommodated when compared to May the year before.



In the first five months of 2002, there was registered an increase of 2% in local tourism, i.e., the numbers of Israelis accommodated in local hotels.
