While Israelis are used to seeing Europe as hostile territory, particularly recently, an editorial from the central Egyptian newspaper al-Ahram suggested that the Europeans are too pro-Israel. So much so, writes the editorialist, that ?Support to the Jewish state has exceeded the dictates of reality and of history, even more. European countries would do anything to protect Israel??

The Egyptian writer sees the Europeans as responsible for the ?Middle East crisis, alias the Palestinian question, the question which served as a solution to the Jewish dilemma in Europe.? Why? Because, according to al-Ahram, ?Christian communities in the continent proved themselves against the concept of coexistence with the Jews. Hence the European answer, namely their support of the Jewish usurpation of Palestine.? For that reason alone, ?Europe is hypersensitive about anything relating to Israel,? says the column. ?They sought to solve their own problem;? the al-Ahram editorial says, referring to the Jewish presence in Europe, ?but while doing so they have wrought a tragedy on the Palestinian people; a tragedy whose scenes continue to unfold at the hands Israel's Sharons and Pereses.?

European support for Israel continues, the Egyptian editorial claims, even while, ?as a state, Israel is essentially militaristic and aggressive?? This is due to an ?illusion of the need to protect it,? the author writes. The problem today is that the ?Europeans are so prone to Jewish extortion that when once a man should raise his voice, as has the leader of the German Liberal Democratic Party, accusing Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of fuelling anti-Semitic sentiments by his continued aggressions against the Palestinian people, noting Tel Aviv's trampling down on the provisions of international law, hell broke loose. The Central Jewish Council would not rest until an apology was made.?

Instead, ?the European communities should indeed feel guilty towards the Palestinians?? states the official Egyptian newspaper?s editorial.
