SANA, the official Syrian news agency, reported this week that Damascus Radio?s daily ?Political Commentary? broadcast addressed the issue of a regional conference on the Arab-Israeli conference. Damascus Radio, as a mouthpiece for government positions, ?underlined that the aim of the calls for holding future regional and international conferences on conflict in the region is to liquidate the al-Aqsa Intifada and to abort its efforts to end the Israeli occupation and ensure the national rights of the Palestinian people,? reported SANA.
With reference to the post-Gulf War peace conference in Madrid, attended by all the nations of the region, the official Syrian radio blamed Israel for its failure to produce peace. The reason being, as reported by SANA, ?because Israel has refused to withdraw to the line of June 4th 1967.? This is apparently what is meant when Damascus radio states that ?Israel is also rejecting just and comprehensive peace according to land for peace principle.?
Because Israel will refuse to surrender territory as a prerequisite for negotiations, the Syrian position on regional talks is that it is ?useless to say that holding a conference for peace would yield any results except attaining more gains for the Israelis.? The clearest evidence for that position, according to Damascus Radio, as reported by SANA, is that ?Otherwise the United States would have exerted efforts to revive the peace process in line with Madrid Conference.?
