A new Jewish Heritage Museum and Research Center is set to be built in Kiev, Ukraine. The cornerstone for the new facility was laid by Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma on the day honoring the memory of those killed at Babi Yar - not far from the site of the new museum. Jewish organizations in Kiev and the Joint Distribution Committee will fund the center?s construction.
The designers selected for the museum and research center are architects from the Israeli firm of Flesner, owned by Ulrich and Daniella Flesner. The JDC held an international competition to design the Kiev museum, which was judged by a panel of judges that included professional architects, along with 500 members of Kiev's Jewish community. The winning design ?integrates the spiritual contrasts between the past and the future - the flourishing of new cultural life tog tether with the preservation of the knowledge of the past,? according to the architects.
