Professor Michal Schwartz of the Neuroimmunology department at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, and scientific founder of Proneuron Biotechnologies, Ltd., was awarded the Friedenwald Award by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), ?for pioneering work in the area of optic nerve recovery after injury.? Prof. Schwartz's studies of glaucoma have demonstrated that progression of glaucoma and other neurodegenerative disorders can be attenuated by vaccination. A therapeutic vaccine for such acute and chronic neurodegenerative disorders is currently under development by Proneuron, who is the financial backer of Prof. Schwartz?s research.
