The city of Akko (Acre), on Israel?s Mediterranean coast, will be officially declared a ?World Heritage Site? on Tuesday, May 21. The state ceremony will mark the official designation, as was decided by United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Oorganization (UNESCO) in October of 2001. In addition to Akko?s Old City, Masada National Park was also named as a World Heritage Site during the special conference of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee last year. Masada and Akko are the first Israeli sites to be designated by UNESCO as part of the world?s heritage.
